I’ve spent the last couple of years intending to read authors I am not familiar with whose original language was or is not English. Somehow they often get shifted to the bottom of the pile. I did read Unforgiving Years by Victor Serge last fall and start Metropole by Ferenc Karinthy. Challenging reads.
Even though book publishing is suffering generally there are several publishers willing to take risks on translated work and several websites devoted to translations including this one and this one. I think the internet will have a lot to do with introducing readers to works they have never been exposed to. This is a good thing.
