Japanese Literature Challenge 4

Organized by Bellezza, the Japanese Literature Challenge 4 runs from June 1, 2010 to January 31, 2011.  All it requires is that you read one book of Japanese Literature.  There is a lovely list of  book suggestions here.

I have at least three Japanese novels on my hold list at the library.  Thought I would join in, maybe I can finally get around to reading Murakami.

  1. I’m so happy that you’re in, and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Murakami. He is absolutely one of my favorite authors ever, of all time; I can’t say enough about him. At first, I was confused about his work, thinking I needed to understand every little twist or nuance…now I just read, and sometimes reread, for the experience. One has to suspend one’s belief with him, but it’s so worth the ride. What are you thinking of beginning with? I’ve only read Kafka on The Shore, After Dark, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Dance Dance Dance and A Wild Sheep Chase. But, I hope to finish all of his novels by the end of the challenge. We’ll see! Looking forward to your thoughts.

    • I have had a hard time getting into Murakami in the past. The comment on your experience with his work definitely helps! I just don’t know what to start with. Any suggestions?

  2. Gavin, I’ll also be reading a book or two for this with you and the rest of Bellezza’s challenge crew–look forward to your reviews as always!

  3. Hurray! So glad you decided to join, too.

    • JoAnn – I am excited about the Japanese Literature Challenge. There are many books from Japan that I have intended to read and this will get me going.
