A Surprise In The Mail!

For taking part in the Spotlight Series highlighting NYRB Classics, that fine publisher has sent me a gift!

The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne

by Brian Moore

NYRB Classics, New York, 2010

From the NYRB website:

The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne is an unflinching and deeply sympathetic portrait of a woman destroyed by self and circumstance. First published in 1955, it marked Brian Moore as a major figure in English literature (he would go on to be short-listed three times for the Booker Prize) and established him as an astute chronicler of the human soul.

Judith Hearne is an unmarried woman of a certain age who has come down in society. She has few skills and is full of the prejudices and pieties of her genteel Belfast upbringing. But Judith has a secret life. And she is just one heartbreak away from revealing it to the world.

Along with the book , NYRB sent me a tote bag just perfect for hauling book back and forth to the library.  Every time I visit their website and browse their Classics and Children’s book collections I add more books to my wishlist.  Check them out!

  1. Wow, how cool is that!??!? Enjoy!

  2. I was so pleased when I got mine in the mail too! I’d completely forgotten about the whole thing – the tote bag was a particularly nice treat, as I’m away from home for the summer and had totally forgotten to pack a bag for library books (or groceries).

  3. I am so glad everyone is receiving their gifts. I love the tote bag- it’s so beautiful and clearly very durable! NYRB is fabulous :-) Thanks for participating!
